My husband and I have been so taken with the welcome we've received, upon moving to Waitsburg, that we wanted to find a way to give back to the community. We have loved the luminaries we've been to, and since the whole point is "community", people out walking and talking, it seemed like the perfect way.
I first broached the subject with Claire Johnston of Amo Art, only to learn that her gallery was hosting an illuminated art show during the month, so it seemed like the perfect time. I talked to a few merchants along main street, and then to the Commercial Club. They were very supportive, and helped us to get the okay from the city. As plans evolved, it became more and more a community event. Coppei coffee will be making the cookies, Waitsburg's own "Wicker Chair Winos" will be providing the music, and even the Library said they would stay open for the event. We could not be more pleased. Such a beautiful building.
However, imagine our surprise, when the Town Hall board offered to defer the costs of renting the hall, in order to thank the community for helping with their renovations! Next, we were able to get some students to help with the lights, for their community service credits. It truly is turning into a community event.
The walk itself is a bit short, this first year (although we expect to place between 800 and 1000 lights), and so we are glad to have some businesses staying open. Etceteras, Hugs Gifts and Collectables, I have already mentioned the library, and perhaps a few more will join in the fun. The Town Hall will be open with music, Cookies, hot chocolate, and perhaps some tea and coffee. Outside the Town Hall will be "The Q", with $3.00 pulled pork and salmon sliders. His BBQ alone is worth seeing--quite ingenious. The owner, Emery Kleck, tells me he is thinking of adding a soup to his menu, for the occasion.
We hope this will become a tradition, and invite everyone out to meet and greet your neighbors. Thanks to all of you who have made our first year in Waitsburg such a joy.
